The Perspective of “New Lebanese Party” on the Relationship between the Countries (Lebanon – Saudi Arabia)
Undoubtedly, the new Lebanese generation always seeks to build better relations between Lebanon and the Arab countries, including the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is not hidden from anyone that the relationship between the two countries has deteriorated over the past period due to several reasons, which we cannot fully explain now. However, it is clear that both parties bear responsibility for the deterioration of the relationship.
Regarding the Lebanese side, the leaders of the system contributed, over the past years, especially after the Taif Agreement, to selling Lebanon’s political decisions to the highest bidder. Saudi Arabia had a significant share in this, as no Lebanese government is formed without the approval of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and no Lebanese president reaches the presidency without Saudi Arabia’s consent. This has often made the scene appear repugnant and humiliating. In the last three decades, the role of the Saudi ambassador in Lebanon transformed from a diplomat representing his country to a de facto ruler of our country.
As it is known, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia directly provided financial support to some Lebanese parties, which made these parties act shamelessly in favor of Saudi Arabia, regardless of our country’s national interests. This is considered a great betrayal in the “New Lebanese” dictionary.
We are well aware that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has played important and positive roles in supporting Lebanon, at least with the Taif Agreement, which halted the civil war, regardless of our party’s political stance on this agreement. Moreover, Saudi Arabia’s financial support helped Lebanon to recover and rebuild. In “The New Lebanese” party, we do not deny this kindness, especially as Lebanon was in dire need of such support to rise again. However, this support has turned into a constant reliance, causing Lebanon’s system to depend mainly on support from Saudi Arabia or any other party, and international aid has become a way of life. The Lebanese system has turned into a passive one, not caring about developing economic or developmental plans that could free Lebanon from economic subordination to any external entity.
If the (war system) falls in Lebanon, and the New Lebanese take over the country’s leadership, they will seek to restore the Lebanese-Saudi relationship as it should be: based on mutual respect and non-interference in each other’s internal affairs. Both countries should work together to enhance bilateral relations and find solutions to the existing problems between them, in the best interest of both the Lebanese and Saudi peoples.
